Quantum Hypothesis Testing and Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics

We extend the mathematical theory of quantum hypothesis testing to the general W ∗-algebraic setting and explore its relation with recent developments in non-equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics. In particular, we relate the large deviation principle for the full counting statistics of entropy flow to quantum hypothesis testing of the arrow of time.

Non equilibrium statistical mechanics

In part I of these lecture notes, I introduce the basic tools of non equilibrium statistical mechanics: linear response, Brownian motion, Langevin equation, (Pauli) master equation. Part II is devoted to a derivation of quantum master equations from the Schrödinger equation, and to some of their applications to quantum optics and to Brownian motion. Finally, in part III, I examine more recent d...

Positive Commutators in Non-Equilibrium Quantum Statistical Mechanics

The method of positive commutators, developed for zero temperature problems over the last twenty years, has been powering progress in the spectral analysis of Hamiltonians in quantum mechanics. We extend this method to positive temperatures, i.e. to non-equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics. We use the positive commutator technique to give an alternative proof of a fundamental property of l...

Mathematical theory of non-equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics

We review and further develop a mathematical framework for non-equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics recently proposed in [JP4, JP5, JP6, Ru3, Ru4, Ru5, Ru6]. In the algebraic formalism of quantum statistical mechanics we introduce notions of non-equilibrium steady states, entropy production and heat fluxes, and study their properties. Our basic paradigm is a model of a small (finite) quant...

Prolegomena to a Non-Equilibrium Quantum Statistical Mechanics

The classical statistical theory of thermodynamical phenomena, due largely to Boltzmann, Maxwell, and Gibbs, is one of the cornerstones of 20th century physics. It describes equilibrium phenomena ranging from gas dynamics over steam engines to crystals, while its quantum extension accurately describes radiation phenomena, metals, and superconductivity, to name but a few examples. Nature’s tende...
